Kirpan – A Sacred Symbol of Courage and Faith
The Kirpan is one of the five sacred articles of faith in Sikh community (the Five Ks or Kakaars) mostly worn by initiated Sikhs (Amritdhari). It is not just a weapon—it is a spiritual symbol of duty, protection & compassion. Worn as a reminder to uphold righteousness, defend the weak and promote justice, Kirpan reflects the core Sikh principle of “Deg Tegh Fateh” – serving both the needy and the oppressed.
Meaning of Kirpan?
The word Kirpan comes from two Punjabi words which are “Kirpa” meaning grace & the second word is “Aan” meaning honor. Traditionally, kirpan is a short curved sword or dagger, worn on a strap called gatra across the body.
Kirpans can vary in size—from small, symbolic models to full size ceremonial swords and are made from stainless steel or iron.
