About Wedding Gaana

A wedding gaana is a sacred Moli or thread which is made from vibrant red and yellow threads adorned with beads, pearls, ghungroos and cowry shells and other traditional embellishments. It thread is not just a piece of jewellery in fact it is a thread that symbolizes profound love and unity between the bride and groom.

In Punjabi weddings there is a special Gaana ceremony where the friend of the bride and groom ties the Gaana to them and it is opened by their partners on the next day of the wedding in the rituals called “Gaane Khedna”. This thread also protects bride and groom from evil eye.

The Gaana Ceremony

In Punjabi weddings, the Gaana ceremony is a cherished ritual. The bride’s Gaana is tied after the Chooda ceremony by her maternal uncle, while the groom’s Gaana is tied following the Haldi or Mayian ceremony. The day after the wedding, a fun ritual takes place where the couple unties each other’s Gaana as a playful contest.
