It is made from two words shahi which means wedding and the second is chithi which is letter. So in short it is wedding letter or wedding invitation.

Both the families send this official invitation to each other to solemnize the wedding on the decided day of the marriage. This letter includes all the events that will take place on the wedding.  It is a sort of the official beginning of all the wedding preparations and all the other invitations are sent after the Shahi Chithi.
