Mithat Turbans

The History of Turbans

The turban, or Dastar, has been an important part of the Sikh way of life since the times of the First Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. All the ten Sikh Guru Sahib wore Turban but  it was the Tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who made it mandatory for every sikh that they will not cut their hair and always cover their head under all circumstances.

In adherence to Sikh principles, cutting hair from any part of the body is not allowed and in this the dastar serves as a way to maintain and respect the hair on the head. Sikh history references that Guru Gobind Singh Ji personally tied beautifully rounded turbans which is known as dumalas, on the heads of his elder sons, Ajit Singh Ji and Jujhar Singh Ji and from them this tradition is still followed by all the sikh community.
