The Significance of the Sikh Kara

A Kara is way more than an accessory. It is a sacred reminder of the values of Sikh’s live by—truth, humility, discipline and most importantly equality. The perfect circle of it with no beginning and no end reflects the eternal nature of God.

Whether worn by a child starting their journey of Sikhi, an adult balancing life’s duties, or an elder guiding the younger generation, the Kara keeps us all connected to the same faith and principles.

The Origin of the Sikh Kara

The Kara was first introduced by the 10th Guru Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, on the auspicious day of Vaisakhi in 1699. It was established as one of the five Kakars—holy articles of faith to be worn by all Amritdhari Sikhs.

Traditionally made from Sarbloh (iron), its unbroken circle symbolizes eternity—the endless connection between the Sikh and Waheguru. More than just a bracelet guru ji’s intention behind this kara to be a constant reminder for Sikhs to remain humble, disciplined & courageous, no matter where life may lead them.
